Description
The history of the Spanish Army - one of the most extensive among contemporary armies - spans at least five centuries, during which its units fought throughout Europe, North, Central and South America, from Africa and Asia. During the beginnings of its long history, the Spanish Army developed innovative concepts of combat and organization that allowed it for a time to be the dominant land force in both Europe and America. The War of Independence started a period of fruitless colonial and fratricidal wars and the Army's intervention in politics, which did not end until the democratic restoration at the end of the 20th century. Since then, the Army has modernized, recovering its fundamental mission of defense against external aggressions, and participating in international security missions in cooperation with other friendly nations.
