Description
During the American Civil War, the Union, also known as the North, referred to the United States of America, specifically to the national government and the 20 free states and 5 border states that supported it. In the South, most did not hear of the proclamation for months. But the purpose of the Civil War had now changed. The North was not only fighting to preserve the Union, it was fighting for emancipation. Throughout this time, northern black men had continued to pressure the army to enlist them. The Union included the states of Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon.
