Description
The Honourable East India Company (HEIC), founded in 1600, began as a trading enterprise granted a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I. Initially focused on importing spices, textiles, and other goods from India and Southeast Asia, it gradually established fortified trading posts in Surat, Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta. Over the 17th and early 18th centuries, the Company navigated complex relationships with local rulers and competing European powers, expanding both trade and influence. Its transformation from merchants to rulers accelerated after the Battle of Plassey in 1757, where Robert Clive’s victory over the Nawab of Bengal effectively gave the Company control over Bengal’s revenue and administration. This marked the start of the Company’s political and military dominance in India, extending its reach through treaties, wars, and alliances. By 1856, just before the Company’s dissolution and the transfer of power to the British Crown, the HEIC had become a formidable power
