!Long live Vorkuta! Vorkutá has its origin in 1932, when forced labor camps were opened there. From the decade of the 30s, the Gulag prisoners will work building the town and exploiting the coal deposits that exist nearby. Vorkutá obtained the status of the city on November 26, 1943. Its main source of income lies in the exploitation of the rich coal basin of the Pechora River.2 In 1953, the city witnessed an uprising of the prisoners, known as the Vorkutá Uprising.
