Description
The Legio III Diocletiana was raised by Diocletian in 296 or 298 AD. Regular recruitment would always happen in the Thebiad provinces in Upper Egypt. Later, Theodosius I would add Greuthungi Goths from the steppes of the Black Sea between the Diester and Don Rivers in southern Ukraine and Tervingi Goths from western Scythia (Moldavia and Wallachia) or the mountainous region of Transylvania; foederati to the legion. It was created reinforce Egypt, first garrisoning Kherbeta near Alexandria in Aegyptus Iovia. At the beginning of the 4th century, detachments were sent to Thebes and Kom Ombo, with other detachments were sent south of the Nile valley and off the Nile valley. They were also stationed in Egypt never leaving, being a legio comitatensis under the Comes Limitatis Aegyptis at Kom Ombos in the province of Thebaida Secunda; though two of its detachments at Nag al-Hagar and Thebes were limitanei; with another being at Aswan The legion existed until 545 AD when it was disbanded.
