═────────────────────────────────────────═ The Kingdom of Greece and the Greek nationality has only been in existence since 1821, and was only officially independent until 1829 with the Treaty of Adrianople, which marked the end of the Greek War of Independence. This makes Greece a relatively young state. Before this point, Greeks were called 'Romans.' The Hellenic State historically had close ties to Britain, even at one point when Otto of Greece was deposed in 1862, elected one of the British Royal family, Alfred of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha. Despite the fact he was chosen through an election, the British monarch, Victoria would not let Alfred become King of Greece.
