Description
The German Democratic Republic (GDR), or East Germany, was a Soviet-aligned communist state from 1949 to 1990, formed from the Soviet occupation zone after World War II, with East Berlin as its capital, famously divided from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall. Governed by the Socialist Unity Party (SED), it featured a centrally planned economy and served as a key part of the Eastern Bloc, facing challenges like economic strain from reparations and political repression, symbolized by the Wall and popular unrest leading to its eventual collapse and German reunification in 1990.
