Cօhortes Urbanae #6401360

Description
The Cohortes Urbanae are a core paramilitary formation within the Roman Empire. They were created to counterbalance the enormous power held by the Praetorian Guard in the Empire. They are commanded by the Praefectus Urbanus. Only free citizens are eligible to serve in the ranks of the Cohortes Urbanae to avoid infiltration by foreign spies. Their primary role was to police the urban regions of the Empire and counteract roaming mobs and gangs that often haunted the streets of urban areas. The urban cohorts thus acted as a heavy duty police force, capable of riot control duties. As a trained paramilitary organization, the urban cohorts could, on rare occasions, go to battle if necessary. This role, however, was only called upon in dire situations. Unlike the Vigiles, who mostly operated at night as firefighters and watchmen, members of the urban cohorts were considered legionaries, though with higher pay than the regular legions—if not quite as much as the Praetorian Guard.
