Description
The Ancient Roman family (or gens as it is also known) is a complex social structure that perpetually strives to make its name renown throughout the Empire by means of union adoption and intrigue. Family is an important part of life in the Empire and much of Roman law is written around protecting the basic structure of the "familia". The gens you belong to will often determine your place in Roman society and whether you are considered a patrician or a plebeian. A Roman gens includes more than just the basic family of father, mother, and children. It also includes all the people who are part of the household such as the gladiators, servants and freedmen. As a result, some families in Rome grew quite large. The Emperor's own family often included thousands of members.
