𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐨 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚 The Refugio Militia was organized in 1834 within the Power-Hewetson Colony centered at Refugio as a civic defense force composed of local settlers and Tejano residents prior to the Texas Revolution. During the Texas Revolution, the militia was reactivated and served in support of Texian operations along the coastal region, contributing men to early actions such as the capture of Presidio La Bahía and later operating under the command of James Fannin. Its service in the Goliad Campaign, culminating in the Battle of Coleto and the subsequent executions in the Goliad Massacre, illustrates the essential role of locally organized militia forces in sustaining the Texian war effort prior to the establishment of a permanent and standardized military structure under the Republic of Texas. 1834-1836
