Description
The Galactic Senate, also known as the Republic Senate, Galactic Congress, or simply the Senate, was the primary legislative body of the Galactic Republic in the Star Wars universe. It served as the central governing institution for over 25,000 years, from its founding around 25,053 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) until its transformation and eventual dissolution. Located on Coruscant, the galactic capital planet, the Senate convened in the massive Galactic Senate Building, specifically within the iconic Senate Chamber (also called the Grand Convocation Chamber or Senate Rotunda). This enormous circular hall featured over 1,000 repulsorpods—floating platforms—that allowed senators and their delegations to participate in debates. Wealthier or more influential worlds often had dedicated pods, while smaller systems or sectors shared them. The chamber symbolized both the vast scale of galactic democracy and the bureaucratic complexity that eventually undermined it.
