Description
The House of Comerford, founded 1169 by Norman knights who landed with Strongbow, is one of Europe’s oldest surviving untitled noble families. For centuries they were powerful Catholic gentry in Kilkenny, lords of Ballybur and Inchiholohan castles, allied by marriage to the Butlers (Dukes of Ormonde) and the Graces. True wealth came in the 19th century. In 1847 Sir Henry Comerford built the Castlecomer Collieries; by 1900 the family controlled vast anthracite mines and modern steelworks in Wales. Under Edward and Gerald Comerford the private empire grew into coal, ships, armour plate, aviation alloys and North Sea oil rigs. In 1967 they sold British steel holdings at the peak and reinvested in titanium and superalloys for jet engines and space. Today Sir Lucian Comerford (b. 1968), 22nd in direct line from the 1169 knight, heads a discreet £9–11 billion group from restored Ballybur Castle. Ancient blood, modern metal — low-profile, devoutly Catholic, immensely rich.
