DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is an independent research and development agency of the United States Department of War. It was created in 1958 after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik to ensure the United States would never again face a major technological surprise from an adversary. DARPA's mission is to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The agency pursues radical high-risk high-reward ideas that are often considered too speculative ambitious or long-term for traditional military research organizations or private industry to fund on their own. DARPA does not operate large permanent laboratories or run routine research programs. It funds small agile teams of top scientists engineers and innovators usually through short-term (3–5 year) high-impact projects.
