Description
The Fifth Corps was formed within the Army of the Potomac on May 18, 1862 as Fifth Corps Provisional, which was engaged in the Peninsula Campaign to seize Richmond. It was created by merging the 3rd Division of the Third Corps with a division of U.S. Regular troops, formerly held in Reserve.
