Description
Bison National Shipping & Freight Asset/Resource Protection Division (BNSF Police/Security Department) “Protecting the Supply Lines.” Origins The Bison National Shipping & Freight Police Department (BNSF-PD) was established in the late 19th century alongside the rapid expansion of BNSF’s predecessor railroads. Early rail operations were frequent targets of theft, sabotage, and bandit activity, especially across remote desert and frontier regions where local law enforcement presence was limited. To protect company assets, rail workers, and cargo, BNSF’s legacy railroads began commissioning special railroad officers, many of whom were former marshals, deputies, or military veterans. These officers were granted authority under state railroad statutes, allowing them to enforce laws on railroad property and investigate crimes involving rail operations.
