Description
The Motoyama clan (本山氏) was one of the established kokujin families of Tosa Province during the Sengoku period. Based around Asakura-jō, the clan controlled territory and military forces in central Tosa and was regarded as a significant local power before the rise of the Chōsokabe. Their authority rested on long-held lands and a network of retainers. As the Chōsokabe expanded, the Motoyama became one of the clans resisting this consolidation. In 1560, Motoyama Shigetoki led his forces at the Battle of Tonomoto (also known as Nagahama), where they were defeated by Chōsokabe Kunichika, with the young Chōsokabe Motochika taking part in the campaign. Following this defeat, Motoyama's territory was gradually reduced. Under the continued expansion of Chōsokabe Motochika, the clan eventually lost its independence and was absorbed into the Chōsokabe domain by the early 1570s. The Motoyama are remembered as one of the major kokujin clans of central Tosa during the Sengoku period.
