Description
The Winchester Police Department was unofficially formed in 1784 as both a night watch and day watch, which served the population of Winchester during the night to deter crime as many other municipalities done in the newly formed Union of Columbia. During the Columbia War of Succession in 1861, the WPD had been responsible for a series of escalations against pro-Union supporters, in which the department had violently suppressed numerous pro-Union demonstrations in support of the Confederacy of Columbia. This resulted in the Union Defense Bureau temporarily seizing power of the department before relinquishing power back to the WPD in 1863. Today, the WPD acts as the municipal-level civilian law enforcement agency of the Town of Winchester.
