Description
The Kunaishō (宮内省), or Ministry of the Imperial Household, was responsible for the management of the Emperor’s private domain and the internal affairs of the palace. Its duties included overseeing imperial estates, household finances, palace staff, and the provisioning of food, clothing, and daily necessities for the court. It supervised numerous bureaus that handled everything from imperial kitchens and storehouses to artisans, attendants, and palace maintenance. Unlike ministries concerned with state governance, the Kunaishō focused on the Emperor’s personal and domestic sphere, ensuring the smooth operation of court life behind the scenes. In practice, it functioned as the logistical and economic backbone of the imperial household, sustaining the daily existence and ceremonial needs of the throne.
