กองพันจู่โจม เกิดขึ้นมาจากความขาดแคลนหน่วยสำหรับปฏิบัติภารกิจโดยตรงในพื้นที่นอกประเทศที่มีคุณสมบัติ คล่องตัว รวดเร็ว และจู่โจม ตามการปฏิบัติที่เคยเกิดขึ้นและสร้างความได้เปรียบให้กับฝ่ายเรา เช่น กรณีช่องบก และบ้านร่มเกล้า กองทัพบกจึงได้ก่อตั้งกองพันจู่โจมขึ้น ตามคำสั่งกองทัพบก (เฉพาะ) ลับ ที่ 121/31 ของกองทัพบก ลงวันที่ 31 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2531 ขึ้นการบัญชาการต่อหน่วยบัญชาการสงครามพิเศษ โดยเป็นหน่วยที่จำลองแบบมาจากกรมจู่โจมที่ 75 ของกองทัพบกสหรัฐ[3] มีที่ตั้งอยู่ที่อาคารกองรบพิเศษ (พลร่ม) ที่ 2 ค่ายสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2535 ได้ย้ายมาตั้งยังที่ตั้งปัจจุบัน คือ บ้านน้ำจั้น ตำบลเขาสามยอด อำเภอเมืองลพบุรี จังหวัดลพบุรี[1]
