𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞 The French Army, officially referred as the Ground Army (Armée de Terre) was the army of the French Third Republic during the Great War. Upon the declaration of war in 1914, the army swelled to a force of about 4 million men after mobilisation, and bore the brunt of the German attacks into France. In the first year of the war, the French Army would suffer devastating losses in the defence of their country, with casualties numbering almost a million by the end of 1914. The French Army would continue to play a prominent role on the Western Front and would be responsible for holding the majority of the front for the duration of the war.
