Description
The Emirate of al-Andalus (Imarat al-Andalus), resting upon the fertile plains and rugged sierras of the far western Caliphate, stands as the empire’s proud western bastion. From its noble cities Qurtubah, Ishbiliyah, and Gharnatah, the Emirate administers the Andalusi lands with refinement, discipline, and loyalty to the Abbasid Caliph. Its irrigated orchards and prosperous markets enrich the Caliphate’s coffers, while its ports command the seas linking the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Maghreb. The poets, jurists, artisans, and seasoned warriors of al-Andalus form a vibrant frontier society, defending the empire’s distant marches with steadfast resolve. At its heart rises the illustrious city of Qurtubah, a jewel of Abbasid authority, whose mosques, gardens, and halls of learning testify to the enduring harmony between culture, faith, and imperial governance at the empire’s western edge.
