Description
During the Middle Ages, German kings established an empire in central and western Europe called the Holy Roman Empire. It was first called holy during the 1100's and 1200's, mainly because its emperors said that God had established the "Holy Empire" just as he had established the Holy Church. The rulers said that God had given them their powers so they could keep the peace and protect ########## from their enemies. The emperors often quoted the New Testament verse that commands: "Fear God. Honor the king." The empire was called Roman because its leaders envisioned it as the successor to the ancient Roman Empire (27 B.C.–A.D. 476), which once ruled all the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The powerful German states of the early Middle Ages adopted the Roman title of emperor for their rulers, just as they adopted the ######### religion of the late Roman Empire. (The title "Holy Roman emperor" was never officially used.) The Roman title of emperor was considered.
