Description
The Bavarian Army in the Napoleonic Era (c. 1799–1815) played a significant role in Central European warfare and underwent major transformation during this period. At the turn of the 19th century, Bavaria was a relatively small German state within the Holy Roman Empire, but through alliance with Napoleon Bonaparte it rose in status and military importance. In 1805, Bavaria sided with France against Austria and Russia, a decision that proved decisive: after Napoleon’s victory at Austerlitz, Bavaria was rewarded with territorial gains and elevated to the status of a kingdom under King Maximilian I Joseph. This political rise required a stronger, more modern army.
