Description
การสถาปนาเมือง สร้างขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 1368 โดยสองพี่น้องตำนานมอญ (สมิงสามลากับสมิงราม) และต่อมาราชวงศ์มอญภายใต้การนำของ พระเจ้าฟ้ารั่ว (มะกะโท) ได้สถาปนาอาณาจักรหงสาวดีขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการ โดยมีศูนย์กลางสำคัญในการปกครองและย้ายราชธานีมายังหงสาวดีในยุคพระเจ้าราชาธิราช เพื่อใช้เป็นชัยภูมิในการรับมือศึกกับอาณาจักรทางเหนือ (อาณาจักรอังวะ) ยุคราชวงศ์ตองอู ในยุคทองและสงครามขยายดินแดน พระเจ้าตเบ็งชะเวตี้ และ พระเจ้าบุเรงนอง ทรงเลือกหงสาวดีเป็นศูนย์กลางอำนาจและศูนย์กลางเสบียงอันยิ่งใหญ่ พระเจ้าบุเรงนองทรงสร้างพระราชวังหงสาวดี (กัมโพชธานี) อย่างอลังการ เพื่อใช้เป็นฐานทัพในการส่งกองทัพขยายแผ่นดิน และตีกรุงศรีอยุธยาแตกครั้งแรกใน พ.ศ. 2112 ซึ่งในครั้งนั้นได้มีการกวาดต้อนเชลยศึก ทรัพย์สิน และช่างฝีมือชาวอยุธยาไปยังหงสาวดีเป็นจำนวนมาก จุดสิ้นสุดความเป็นราชธานี ใน พ.ศ. 2299 พระเจ้าอลองพญาแห่งราชวงศ์โก้นบองได้เข้ายึดและทำลายเมืองหงสาวดีจนราบคาบเพื่อปราบชาวมอญ ส่งผลให้หงสาวดีสูญเสียศูนย์กลางอำนาจอย่างถาวร ย้ายศูนย์กลางไปทางเหนือ และกลายเป็นเพียงเมืองบริวารในที่สุด
