Description
[1900] The 40th United States Volunteer Infantry Regiment was the first unit to land on the Mindanao islands, specifically at Cagayan de Misamis (now Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro City), on March 31, 1900. It was led by Colonel Edward A. Godwin and Lieutenant Colonel Bernard A. Byrne. This regiment was responsible for the victories in the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis and Agusan Hill (together with the 35th), yet it suffered one historic defeat in Macahambus Hill. This defeat also marks the first victorious battle of the Filipinos in the entire Philippine-American War.
