Description
𝑀𝑈𝑇𝐴𝑊𝐴𝐾𝐾𝐼𝐿𝐼𝑇𝐸 𝐾𝐼𝑁𝐺𝐷𝑂𝑀 𝑂𝐹 𝑌𝐸𝑀𝐸𝑁 Following the Armistice of Mudros in 1918, Ottoman forces withdrew from the Yemen Vilayet. The Imam immediately asserted sovereignty over the northern highlands. In 1926, the Imam officially proclaimed the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen, establishing himself as both the temporal monarch and the spiritual Imam of the Zaydi Shia sect. Yemen clashed with the rising power of Ibn Saud over the disputed border regions of Asir, Jizan, and Najran. The brief but decisive Saudi-Yemeni War of 1934 ended in a Yemeni defeat. Under the subsequent Treaty of Taif, the Imam was forced to cede these fertile territories to Saudi Arabia in exchange for peace and recognition of his regime. The Imam pivoted entirely inward. He used his regularized army to finally crush lingering domestic dissent. On the eve of World War II, Yemen entered a period of relative stability and calm.
