Description
The Söğüt Alayı was a military division created by Abdul Hamid II to serve as his personal bodyguard. The Sultan decreed that the guards to be recruited for the Söğüt Regiment should be members of families who had come to Söğüt with Ertuğrul Gazi , excellent horsemen, of good character, who prayed five times a day, who were self-employed, decent, handsome, and of good stature. Since the tribesmen would serve as Abdulhamid II 's personal guards, their service would be continuous and their ties with their homeland severed. Therefore, it was crucial that the guards come of their own free will. The chosen guards would swear an oath at the Tomb of Ertuğrul Gazi to obey orders completely until their last breath and to serve the sultan faithfully. "None of them betrayed. " - Tahsin Pasha, the First Secretary of Abdulhamid II.
