Description
Their origins were never meant to be known. First mentioned in 120 AD, they likely emerged under Empress Alara, replacing the despised frumentarii. Called agentes in rebus, “those active in affairs,” they were couriers in title but spies, enforcers, and silencers in reality. Answering only to the Empress, they moved through the empire unseen and feared. Known as magistrianoi in Greek, they vanished during the winter of 327 AD.
