Description
For centuries, Ireland was ruled directly or indirectly by England and later Great Britain. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Irish nationalism had grown significantly, fuelled by cultural revival movements (like the Gaelic League), political activism, and demands for self-governance. In April 1916, Irish republicans launched the Easter Rising in Dublin, declaring an Irish Republic. Though the rebellion was suppressed, the British execution of its leaders dramatically increased public sympathy for independence. The political party Sinn Féin won a sweeping electoral victory in 1918 and declared independence, forming the First Dáil (Irish parliament). The Irish Republican Army (IRA) began guerrilla warfare against British forces, leading to the Anglo-Irish War. The 1921 Treaty ended the war and created the Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion within the British Empire. It also confirmed the partition of Ireland, leaving Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.
