Description
The 1st Mountain Division (Abbreviated 1. GebDiv) is a division of the West German Army headquartered in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. It forms part of II Corps and is stationed predominantly throughout southern Bavaria. Unlike a conventional mountain infantry formation, the division is organized and equipped to conduct operations both in difficult and mountainous terrain and in normal mechanized warfare on open terrain. In 1989 its principal formations are Panzergrenadierbrigade 22 “Oberland”, Gebirgsjägerbrigade 23, and Panzerbrigade 24 “Niederbayern”. The NATO-assigned Heimatschutzbrigade 56, a heavily mechanized and partially active home-defence brigade, has additionally been subordinated to the division since 1985. The division therefore combines mountain infantry with Marder-equipped Panzergrenadiere, Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks, self-propelled and towed artillery, armored reconnaissance, engineers and air defence.
