The Eastern Roman Empire or as more commonly known as the Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Roman Empire itself. In 395 the emperor split the eastern and the western provinces in the empire between his sons, Honorius and Arcadius. Arcadius recived the eastern part of the empire becoming the first Byzantine emperor. After a few decades the west fell. But the east remained prosperous. With Justinian's reign as emperor he retook the lost lands of the west, but after his death the empire faced new threats such as the Sassanid Empire and the steadely growing Arabs The empire lost a big chunk of its lands but after a few centuries with the stable rule of the stable rule of the macedonian dynasty, the empire prospered. The group is set in the year 1000 under the stable rule of Basil the II.
