Description
Roman soldiers were not paid in salt, but they were given a special allowance called a salarium to buy it. The Salt Myth: While the popular rumor says Roman legionaries were paid directly in handfuls of salt, they were actually paid in standard coins. Essential Commodity: Salt was highly valuable in the ancient world for preserving meat, healing wounds, and staying hydrated during grueling marches. The Origin of "Salary": Because salt was so crucial, soldiers received this specific stipend (salarium) to cover its cost. This Latin word is the direct origin of the modern English word "salary."
