Originally employed by six companies, the gunners saw their numbers increase with the addition of additional companies attached to the Young Guard. They were distinguished in most of the great battles of the time, as in Wagram, where they were part of the great battery responsible for crushing the Austrian centre, La Moskova, La Lontzen, Bautzen, Leipzig, Hanau, during the French campaign and finally at Waterloo.
