Description
The Cohors Batavorum, or Batavian Cohort, was one of the most famous auxiliary units in the Roman army. Its soldiers were recruited from the Batavi, a Germanic tribe living along the Rhine River. Known for their loyalty, strength, and exceptional swimming ability, Batavian warriors often fought in elite formations and were trusted with key missions by Roman commanders. Batavian soldiers were trained to swim rivers in full armor, a rare and impressive feat in ancient warfare. They earned a reputation as fierce fighters, disciplined, and loyal to Rome — even serving as Caesar’s personal bodyguard during his campaigns. Notable History Served under Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars. Fought in Britannia, helping to establish Roman control.
