Description
The Confederate States of America was formed in 1861 after the secession of eleven Southern states from the Union. Created to defend their independence and preserve their way of life, the Confederacy established its own government, army, and economy separate from the United States. During the American Civil War, the Confederacy relied on strong military leadership and the determination of its people to resist Union advances. Although outnumbered and facing industrial disadvantages, Confederate forces fought major battles across the South in defense of their territory and cause.
