Description

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐲 The Matagorda Cavalry was organized in February 1836 in the coastal region of Texas around Matagorda as a mounted volunteer battalion placed under the command of Albert C. Horton during the Texas Revolution. Drawn largely from settlers and frontiersmen familiar with the terrain, the unit was equipped for rapid movement and reconnaissance rather than formal battlefield maneuver, reflecting the practical needs of mounted service in the region. Operating in coordination with other Texian forces, it formed part of the loosely organized cavalry elements that supported operations through scouting, screening, and communication duties. Its service illustrates the reliance on locally raised mounted companies during the conflict, prior to the establishment of a more formal and standardized cavalry structure under the Republic of Texas. 1836
