The Sack of Peking and the destruction of the Forbidden City in 1860 by Western powers resulted in the deaths of the Emperor and his son. With no heir, princes fought over the throne, and what followed was the collapse of central authority. Magistrates became warlords and rebellions became emboldened, and what was left of the Qing were squabbling princes in the northeast of China. With China in chaos, a movement erupted to put a Han emperor on the throne, and restore Han culture. Its leader established himself as the ruler of a new state, named Han in defiance of the Qing. There is a long way to go before China is reunified, however.
