Description
The 6th Panzergrenadier Division is a mechanized division of the West German Army headquartered in Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein. Its units are stationed primarily throughout Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. In peacetime the division is subordinate to I Corps, while in the event of war it is assigned to the NATO Allied Land Forces Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland (LANDJUT), responsible for the defence of Schleswig-Holstein and the approaches to Denmark against an attack by Warsaw Pact forces. The division's principal manoeuvre formations are the 16th Panzergrenadier Brigade, 17th Panzergrenadier Brigade and 18th Panzer Brigade, supported by divisional artillery, reconnaissance, engineers, signals, air defence, aviation and logistics units. The 51st Home Defence Brigade also assigned to reinforce the division in wartime, providing additional Jäger and Leopard 1 formations. At full defensive strength the division numbers approximately 30,000 personnel.
