𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆 "𝑬𝒏𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉" The Cretan State of 1898 was a semi-autonomous entity established on the island of Crete following the end of Ottoman rule and the intervention of Great Powers, particularly Britain, France, Italy, and Russia. It emerged after a long period of unrest and revolts by the Cretan population against Ottoman rule, known as the Cretan Revolt of 1897. The state was administered by a High Commissioner appointed by the Great Powers and Greece and had its own constitution and parliament.
