With its vast reserves of natural resources and strategic location along the Congo River, Middle Africa became a prime target for German expansionism. In 1885, Chancellor established a colonial administration in the region, officially designating the area as German Middle Africa. The German Empire quickly set to work exploiting the region's natural resources, including ivory, rubber, and minerals such as copper and cobalt. The colony also served as an important hub for German trade with other African nations and European powers.
