Description
In 1995, the U.S. sent troops to Mozambique under the official name Operation Sacred Independence. On the surface, the deployment was pitched as a friendly peacekeeping and rebuilding effort after the country's civil war. In reality, the mission was a cover. The Pentagon wanted to set up permanent military bases, airfields, and spy posts to secure a strong U.S. presence in Southern Africa and control key ocean trade routes.
