Description
U.S. forces deployed to Nuristan Province during the war in Afghanistan were primarily light infantry units, including elements of the U.S. Army and Special Operations Forces. Operating in extremely rugged, mountainous terrain and isolated valleys, their mission was to disrupt Insurgent networks, deny safe havens, and support the Afghan government’s presence in remote areas. They also worked to build relationships with local communities, gather intelligence, and train Afghan security forces, all while trying to limit cross-border insurgent movement from nearby Pakistan.
