While the greater body of legionaries marched and fought on foot, these cavalrymen gave the legion swiftness and adaptability. In the rugged lands of Britain—where sudden strikes from native tribes demanded vigilance—the equites proved indispensable. They scouted the wild terrain, bore messages across great distances, and could charge into the fray at a moment’s notice.
