Grossherzogthum Bèrg #80835566
Description
A semi-artificial Napoleonic creation, the Berg state came into existence with the Treaty of Schönbrunn in 1805 from the Prussian Duchy of Cleves and the Bavarian Duchy of Berg. Initially, the state was awarded to Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, who was made Grand Duke. He ruled until 1808, when he left to take up the throne of Naples, leading the state to pass back to Napoleon. The French Emperor later appointed his nephew, the 5-year-old Napoleon Louis Bonaparte, as the Grand Duke. During this time, the state was in an undeclared regency as it was ruled by French bureaucrats headed by Pierre Louis Roederer. Berg stands out as it was one of the few German states to prefer using the French language for its administration.
