Feared for their effectiveness and ruthlessness in battle, they played a key role during the Hellenistic period, notably in the successful defense of the island during the Siege of Rhodes in 305 BCE against Demetrius I. Their presence helped secure Rhodes' independence and reinforced its status as a dominant naval power in the eastern Mediterranean. Their naval might spread fear among their foes, establishing their presence.
