Description
Kitsap County was officially incorporated in 1857 by the Washington Territorial Legislature as Slaughter County (later renamed Kitsap), split off from King and Jefferson counties when Washington was still a U.S. territory. Before its incorporation, the Kitsap Peninsula was home to the Suquamish and S'Klallam tribes, and became highly popular among early American settlers for its massive old-growth timber production and deep-water ports. During World War II, Kitsap County served as a critical naval stronghold for the United States. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton became the primary repair facility for the Pacific Fleet, frantically fixing heavily damaged battleships following the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the fallout of 19th-century growth and the building of the booming local timber economy, the historic town of Port Madison initially held the county power until population shifts and shipping growth caused the county seat to eventually move to Port Orchard.,
