Description
The City of Byzantion which is now modern Istanbul which is located in the region of Thrace. King Byzas who came from Megara which is a city state near Athens founded the city as a Dorian Greek colony in 667 B.C. Byzantion was mostly a trading city due to its location between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea trading with Greek colonies in Crimea. Byzantion was conquered by Persia in the Persian War like other northern Greek cities. The city then sided with their allies, Athens against the military machine of Sparta in the Peloponnesian War and was taken by Sparta to disrupt Athenian supply and trade. Byzantion was later conquered by Rome and was later named as Constantinople by Constantine the Great and was made the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Now, Byzantion is Istanbul and one of the largest cities in modern day Turkey.
