Description
The Ministry of Defense was the central authority responsible for the organization, administration, and command of Iraq’s armed forces. Operating under the direct authority of the President, who served as Commander in Chief, the ministry oversaw the Iraqi Army, Republican Guard, and supporting military institutions. Its primary duties included national defense, military planning, force readiness, training, logistics, and weapons procurement. The ministry also coordinated large scale operations and maintained control over strategic military infrastructure. While a formal chain of command existed through the Chief of the General Staff and senior officers, real authority was heavily influenced by political loyalty and party affiliation.
