Republiek der Bataafse #827581047
Description
The Batavian Republic was a short-lived Dutch state that existed from 1795 to 1806, born out of the collapse of the old Dutch Republic and heavily influenced by the French Revolution. It emerged after French revolutionary forces, supported by Dutch Patriot exiles, invaded the Netherlands and overthrew the House of Orange. With the exiled stadtholder William V fleeing to England, the Batavian Republic was proclaimed, marking a dramatic shift from aristocratic rule to a centralized, republican government modelled on revolutionary France. Though nominally independent, the Batavian Republic was effectively a French client state, with its politics, military structure, and foreign policy closely guided by Paris. Early attempts at reform were hindered by internal divisions between federalists and unitarians, but in 1798 a French-backed coup brought a more unified, centralized constitution. The republic modernized its army, introduced civil reforms, and sought to centralize its administration.
