Description
Who are we? During the Cold War, the French Army (Armée de Terre) was a large conscript-based land force of approximately 327,000 active personnel, structured primarily for the territorial defense of Western Europe against a potential Warsaw Pact invasion. Operating under the 1st Army headquartered in Strasbourg, the force comprised three corps and specialized rapid-reaction units, maintaining interoperability with NATO despite France’s 1966 withdrawal from its integrated military command structure.
