The French Monarchy was overthrown and a radical government was put in place, followed by the Directory. Napoleon, a talented, young general overthrew the French Government, declaring himself the First Consul of France. Then, in 1804, crowned himself the First Empereur of France. For the next 5 years, Napoleon launched campaigns across Europe. Forming an empire stretching from Portugal to Poland. With Napoleon is at the height of his power, it seemed like the Grande Armée can not be stopped.
